Notes from Cherie O

September 7, 2018

Good afternoon, Camelback members & friends!

Tomorrow: Family Praise & Worship gathers from 9:30 - 9:45, in Room 8 of the Sabbath School wing, followed by Sabbath Schools for all age groups, from newborn to us older folks, taking place in several locations around the facility. They are all listed on the inside cover of your bulletin when you arrive Sabbath morning. For the worship service, the Young Adult Praise Team will lead us in the Song Service, and we’ll have Appreciation and Prayer Dedication features. Pastor Mark will bring us the morning message, entitled, “LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR.” His scripture reference is Matthew 22:34-39. The service will be followed by guest luncheon in the Rotunda, and as always EVERYONE is welcome, you just need to BRING FOOD. We have a special request from the luncheon facilitators. They are serving haystacks and Mexican dishes. If you would like to make a contribution, please one or more from the following suggestions: Lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream, salsa, SLICED black olives, corn chips, flour tortillas, rice dish, refried beans, any dessert. It's always helpful to our great volunteers, if a few who are attending could stay afterward and assist with clean-up.

Your Camelback Church has scheduled a business meeting with a light meal and game night to follow tomorrow evening/night (September 8) at 6:00 PM, in the Rotunda. All members are encouraged to attend this important meeting. The agenda items include a discussion on the new vision for the church and how the renewed emphasis on discipleship will affect our various ministries here. We will also share the upcoming changes to our weekly worship service and a few new positions being recommended by the Nominating Committee. We invite you to bring snacks and finger foods to share after the meeting along with your favorite board games to play as we fellowship together. We can look forward to both an informative and enjoyable evening. Pathfinder Leaders, you have a meeting at 1:30pm in the Library. And the Elementary Choir will rehearse at 1:45pm in the Sanctuary.

Sunday, September 9, our Adventurers/Jr. Adventurers are in for a treat, Water Fun Day, 9:00am - Noon, at the Thunderbird Adventist Academy campus. Next Sabbath, we all have an opportunity to experience communion together at Camelback. Pastor John will share a message about the importance of this ceremony and what it means for each of us to partake of Christ’s broken body and shed blood through the symbols of the bread and wine. We invite you to come and share in the blessing! Adventurer/Jr. Adventurer Induction and Family Blessing will take place next Sabbath afternoon, 2:00-4:00 in the sanctuary. If you’d like to show your support of this children’s ministry, your attendance would mean a lot!

Stephen Ministry is an important part of our overall Care & Nurture Ministry at Camelback. We are beginning training for a new group of Stephen Ministers on Sabbath, October 13. There will be a sign-up/information table in the foyer tomorrow.

The Camelback Church Board has formed a Security Committee to focus on the safety and medical emergency needs of the church and its members. We are currently seeking volunteers whom we can equip and train to serve on an official team. The team will primarily focus on security during Sabbath School, worship services and church events. The primary duties will be to monitor the campus for any security threats or medical emergencies that might occur and to respond to them immediately by requesting assistance from the proper emergency services, e.g., Fire, EMS, Police. Training will be provided to those who volunteer. If you’re interested in participating in one of the teams, please inform Pastor Mark, Cherie or Jeff York.

I know there’s someone out there whom the Holy Spirit is tugging at your heart strings to respond to this need: The Adventurer Club needs a teacher to work with the Eager Beaver Kindergarten class. We also need a pianist for the Discovery/Jr. Adventurers group. Clubs meet the first and third Sabbaths of the month from 2-4 p.m. Meetings start mid-September and run to mid-May. Contact JoAnn Bloom at

Our Food Pantry can still use your contributions. High-in-demand this time of year are the quick and easy, ready-to-eat items. And, of course, we can always use water. Thank you for your continuing support!

There’s lots more, but I’m out of time for today.

Love, Cherie O
