Notes from Cherie O

March 22, 2018

Good evening, Camelback members & friends!

I want to start out this evening with some news that will be significant to some, and not so much to others. Earlier this week I received a phone call from David Kirby, inquiring if I had heard anything about Ray Mitchell (former Camelback senior pastor, for those who do not know him). I said, no, I had not heard anything. He proceeded to relate to me that he had just gotten news that Ray had suffered a massive stroke the prior week and had been left with major deficiencies. I was devastated! I had done my studying to join the SDA Church with Ray and he had baptized me right here at Camelback on May 7, 1994. David and I agreed not to jump to any conclusions, and he was going to attempt to call Ray as soon as we hung up. He called back shortly thereafter to let me know he had talked with Ray, and though, yes, he did have a stroke, it was not as dire as had been reported. Ray called me himself a few hours later, and it was really great to hear his voice. He wanted me to share with the church family that he did have a minor stroke, and though he is experiencing a few difficulties, the doctors have advised that with time things should clear up. They are departing for Australia the end of this week. Please remember Ray in your prayers for a speedy and complete healing.

This Sabbath (3-24) at Camelback: Family Praise & Worship, 9:30-9:45 in Room 8-come visit, check it out! And, Sabbath Schools for all other age groups, from newborn to the older folks, taking place in several locations around the facility. They are all listed on the inside cover of your bulletin when you arrive Sabbath morning. And I want to remind you Spanish-speaking folks about the class meeting in the senior pastor’s study. Pastor Mark Sulger will bring us the morning message, “THE WHY AND THE HOW OF IT,” with a scripture reference of Exodus 18:19-23. For those who want to be part of the Easter Choir on Sabbath, March 31, there will be a 30-minute rehearsal, immediately following the worship service (3-24) in the Choir Room. There will be a church-wide potluck following the worship service; what better way to get acquainted with new folks and re-connect with old friends, than over a meal. Please bring plenty of your favorite dish(es) and plan to participate. If a few could stay afterward and assist with clean-up, the help would be most welcome!

Sunday (3-25), 9:30am, the Camelback SDA Women’s Breakfast Club will meet at the home of Diane Bond. I’m sure this group would welcome new attendees.

Finance Committee & Church Board take place this coming Monday night (3-26); 6:00 & 7:00pm, respectively, in the Choir Room.

Sabbath, March 31, we will celebrate Easter Sabbath. We will have a blending of the traditional and new, in an effort to meet the needs of a growing church body. We will have Flowers on the Cross, Communion, we’ll hear from the Middle School and Elementary Ministries, the Easter Choir under the direction of KC Moss, and some new and special happenings. Pastor Paul will have a message for us; plan to be here and be blessed! And don’t forget the Glendale SDA Church annual concert. The full choir and orchestra along with the children’s choir will make this a festive and meaningful worship celebration. 4:00 and 7:00pm. Doors open 40 minutes prior to each concert.

A very popular event last year, Ladies of the Gospel, was on our Camelback calendar for Sabbath evening/Saturday night, March 31. Due to a conflicting event in the Valley, Ladies of the Gospel will be re-scheduled to an undetermined date as of this writing. We’ll keep you posted!

A message from our Stained Glass Window committee: Due to the generosity and love of many Camelback Church members and friends, a little over one-half of the necessary $35,350 for completion of the stained glass windows, has been received. This project may be speedily finished if we all continue giving as God impresses us. Pastor Mark made a special announcement last week about the stained glass windows. There are pieces of the original window glass available for a donation. If you’d like to have a remembrance of the windows for your very own, please see me this coming Sabbath. A special feature of the church service this week (3-024) will be the revealing and dedication of our beautiful new windows.

A message from JoAnn Bloom, regarding an Adventurer Club need: "Adventurer Club is in need of an assistant teacher to work with our lead instructor. Adventurers meet every other week. You must be willing to complete the required Verified Volunteer online training. Please contact JoAnn Bloom at (623) 523-2541 or joann.bloom1113@gmail.com” Another message from JoAnn Bloom: "Discovery Club (Baby Birds) Parents: Good News! We have been blessed with additional staff members. Instead of meeting only once a month, the Club will now meet on the following dates: March 17, April 7, April 21, May 4-6 (Family Camp in lieu of regular meeting), May 19, June 2, and June 16. Please watch your e-mail for additional information.”

A message from Gwen Dossey, our dear Camelback member who knits the caps for our Backpacks for Christ ministry. Gwen is experiencing some health issues that are seriously interfering with her ability to knit. She is hoping that others of you out there will be able to pick up the slack until such time as she heals and is able to resume. I think we all know how much this ministry means to Gwen, so please, all who are able, please give Gwen a call (602.404.9180) and let her know you can help.

We have made available to all a place to pray, and to be prayed with, in the Parents Room. Open during SS and after the worship service, come and make your requests known to God, write your requests and place them on the Prayer Board and also your Praises, glorifying God. Stop in and see the beautiful new addition to the room.

Friday, April 6 - Sunday, April 8 is Thunderbird Adventist Academy Alumni Weekend. I am attaching the Weekend Schedule, so for those of you who like to plan ahead, you can go for it!

For those not involved with TAA Alumni Weekend, there will be a concert Sabbath afternoon, April 7, 5:30pm, at the Phoenix Beacon Light SDA Church, "Gospel Music Festival featuring Neville Peter, Michael Harris, Charles Wells and Doris Cole.”

Have a great rest of the evening, and hope to see you on Sabbath!

Love, Cherie O
